ProjectSend r1945 Released: Major Update Brings Enterprise Features and Enhanced Security

We’re excited to announce the release of ProjectSend r1945, the most significant update in the project’s history. This release represents months of development work and introduces groundbreaking features that transform ProjectSend into a truly enterprise-ready file sharing solution. With extensive changes to core systems including permissions, authentication, and file management, this version sets a new standard for secure, flexible file sharing.

Before updating to r1945, we strongly recommend creating complete backups of your database, file system (especially the upload folder), and configuration files. While we’ve conducted extensive testing, the scope of changes in this release makes proper backup procedures essential. Please verify your backups are restorable before proceeding with the update.

The headline feature of this release is server-side file encryption using AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption. Files can now be encrypted at rest with per-file encryption keys, providing military-grade security for sensitive data. This works seamlessly with both local storage and cloud providers like AWS S3, ensuring your files remain protected regardless of where they’re stored. The encryption and decryption processes are completely transparent to end users, maintaining ease of use while dramatically improving security.

The permissions system has been completely overhauled with a new roles manager that allows administrators to create custom roles from scratch or modify existing ones with granular permission controls. This replaces the previous rigid level-based system with flexible, fine-grained access control. Combined with enhanced LDAP/Active Directory integration, improved quota management, and configurable download limits, organizations now have unprecedented control over how users interact with their files.

Visual improvements are equally impressive, with the theme collection expanding from 3 to 9 professional options, a completely redesigned file editor with tabbed interface and bulk operations, and a new email template system with visual editing capabilities. The addition of custom fields, automatic system updates, light/dark mode toggle, and support for multiple CAPTCHA methods round out a release that touches nearly every aspect of the application. We’re grateful to our community of contributors who helped identify issues, submit fixes, and make this our best release yet.
